BigM Performance-based vs retainer

Comparison

Retainer, in-house SDR, or paid on the deal.

Three ways to buy outbound, costed at the same three outcomes. Sources for every outside number are at the bottom.

Cost at the same three outcomes

Assumptions: one quarter, orders of $40,000, a mid-range retainer of $5,000 a month, and the lowest published hybrid base of $2,000 a month. In-house SDR cost is left as "salary plus tools" because it varies by country; what is published is the ramp time.

Quarter outcomeRetainer agencyHybrid base + bonusIn-house SDRBigM
Nothing closed$15,000$6,000Salary + tools, 3 months, still ramping$500
One order of $40,000$15,000$6,000 + bonusSalary + tools$8,500
Three orders of $40,000$15,000$6,000 + bonusSalary + tools$24,500

Read the last row honestly: when outbound works well, a commission model costs more than a retainer. That is the trade. You pay more only in the quarters where you earned more, and nothing in the quarters where you earned nothing.

When each one is the right choice

ChooseWhenWatch for
Retainer agencyYou need volume on a fixed budget, you can supervise closely, and you sell to a market with few public buying signals.Minimum terms, activity reporting instead of pipeline, junior staff after a senior pitch.
In-house SDRYou have enough deal flow to keep one person busy all year and want the knowledge to stay in the building.Three-month ramp, tooling and data costs on top of salary, dependence on one person.
Performance-based (BigM)Your market throws public buying signals (tenders, licences, hiring, requests), your first order is four figures or more, and you want to pay only on closed deals. The attribution rule must be written and short; ours is on the attributed deal page.

Questions

Is 20% of a deal expensive?

On a $40,000 order it is $8,000, roughly what a mid-range retainer costs in seven weeks whether or not anything closes. The fee is high per deal and zero per quarter without deals; which is cheaper depends on your close rate, which is exactly what the model prices.

Can we run BigM alongside an in-house SDR?

Yes. The exclusion list keeps the two from touching the same accounts, and attribution is decided by the approval log, not by who claims the deal.
